The PowerStep Plug-N-Play is the electric running board that deploys the instant you open the door and retracts flush under the rocker when you close it. Purpose-Built Products
We only build things that solve a real problem — stepping into a lifted truck, reaching over an eight-foot bed, hauling cargo that outruns the tailgate. If it doesn’t earn its place, we don’t make it.
Serviceable Design
PowerStep, BedStep, and BedXtender products are engineered to be repaired, not replaced. Modular motors, standardized brackets, and documented part numbers mean your investment stays on the truck.
Truck-Owner Support
Fitment guides, installation walk-throughs, and part diagrams for every platform we cover. Real answers about your F-150, Ram 1500, Silverado, Tundra, or Wrangler — not scripted deflection.
AMP Research PowerStep & Accessories FAQ
Answers to the most common questions from truck owners installing, servicing, or upgrading their AMP Research gear.
PowerStep Running Boards
What is the difference between PowerStep, PowerStep XL, and PowerStep Xtreme?
Standard PowerStep (Plug-N-Play) is the flagship automatic running board for most half-ton and heavy-duty trucks. PowerStep XL adds extra length — extending further ahead of the front door and behind the rear door for crew-cab and lifted applications. PowerStep Xtreme is the reinforced version built for off-road and heavy-duty abuse, with beefier brackets, tougher tread, and fully sealed motors.
Does the AMP Research PowerStep work with the doors closed?
By default, no — the boards deploy when a door opens and retract when the last open door closes. If you want them to stay deployed regardless of door state, add the AMP Research Override Switch (79106-01A), which lets you lock the steps in the extended position with a dash-mounted button.
What is the AMP Research PowerStep Smart Series and how does it use an app?
The Smart Series adds a Bluetooth control module that pairs with the AMP Research app on your phone. You can customize deployment behavior per door, enable hold-open mode, run diagnostics, and update firmware — all without touching the wiring.
BedStep & BedXtender
What is the AMP Research BedStep2 and where does it mount?
The BedStep2 is a retractable step that mounts to the frame just behind the rear tire, giving you a solid climb-in point on the side of the bed without dropping the tailgate. It kicks out with your foot and folds back flush when not in use — great for reaching cargo mid-bed or accessing a truck cap side door.
How much extra bed length does the BedXtender HD Max add?
The BedXtender HD Max flips out over the open tailgate and adds roughly two feet of usable, enclosed bed length — enough to carry full sheets of plywood, long lumber, kayaks, and dirt bikes safely. Flip it inward with the tailgate up and it becomes a cargo divider to keep gear from sliding around.
Installation & Replacement Parts
My AMP Research PowerStep stopped deploying — do I need to replace the whole assembly?
Almost never. The vast majority of PowerStep failures come down to a single serviceable part: a worn motor (80-03129-90), a failed control module (19-04280-STA), a damaged wire harness, or a cracked linkage. Diagnose which component is at fault and replace only that piece — full assemblies rarely need to come off the truck.
What is the AMP Research OBD2 plug used for?
The OBD2 plug is a plug-and-play wiring adapter that lets you install PowerStep on newer vehicles without splicing into the factory harness. It uses the OBD2 port to pick up door-status signals, dramatically shortening install time and keeping the factory wiring untouched.
