AMP Research PowerStep Xtreme Running Boards

Each PowerStep Xtreme board supports up to 600 pounds when properly installed. This capacity easily handles multiple passengers entering the vehicle simultaneously or workers carrying heavy tools and equipment.

The 600-pound rating applies to the deployed position. We don't recommend standing on the boards when retracted, as this can damage the motors and mounting brackets. The weight capacity remains consistent whether you're using the boards on pavement or after exposure to mud, water, and trail conditions.

Most truck owners with basic mechanical skills can install the PowerStep Xtreme in 2-3 hours using common hand tools. We provide vehicle-specific mounting brackets that bolt directly to your frame, and our plug-and-play wiring harness connects to factory door sensors without cutting or splicing wires.

The installation requires lifting your truck on jack stands to access the frame mounting points. You'll need a socket set, torque wrench, and wire strippers for the electrical connection. Our detailed instructions include photos specific to your truck model. If you're not comfortable working under your vehicle or have aftermarket electrical modifications, we recommend professional installation.

The PowerStep Xtreme uses reinforced extruded aluminum construction designed to withstand rock impacts and trail debris. The aluminum platform flexes slightly on impact to absorb energy rather than cracking like composite materials. In most cases, rock strikes leave minor cosmetic damage but don't affect function.

If a severe impact bends the platform or damages the motor assembly, individual components are available for replacement. We stock motors, mounting brackets, and step platforms as separate parts. The structural components and motors carry our limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, though impact damage from off-road use isn't covered under warranty.

The PowerStep Xtreme retracts in approximately 2-3 seconds after you close your door, which is fast enough for most trail situations. The boards tuck tight against your rocker panel in the retracted position, maintaining the same ground clearance as your truck's frame rails.

For technical rock crawling where you need maximum clearance, close your doors before attempting obstacles to ensure the boards are fully retracted. The motors are sealed against dust and water, so they continue operating reliably even after submersion in mud or creek crossings. Some rock crawlers leave their doors closed during technical sections to keep the boards retracted continuously.

The PowerStep Xtreme mounts to your truck's frame rails and typically clears most aftermarket exhaust systems. However, some high-clearance exhaust configurations that route pipes outboard of the frame may require minor modifications to the exhaust hangers or mounting brackets.

Before ordering, check that your exhaust tips exit behind the rear edge of the doors, as the PowerStep extends from the cab area to just behind the rear door. If you have a custom exhaust with unusual routing, send us photos of your current setup and we can verify compatibility before you purchase.

Our weather-sealed motors carry an IP68 rating, meaning they're fully protected against dust and can operate after submersion in water. We test each motor assembly by submerging it in water for 30 minutes at depths up to 3 feet, then cycling it through deployment and retraction.

After water crossings, the boards may take slightly longer to retract if water has entered the mounting area, but the motors will continue working. Once you're back on dry ground, cycle the boards a few times to expel trapped water. The sealed bearings and stainless steel hardware prevent rust and corrosion even with regular water exposure.
