Built for Extreme Off-Road Conditions

We designed the AMP Research PowerStep Xtreme to withstand the harshest environments where standard running boards fail. The reinforced extruded aluminum platform resists bending and cracking even when impacted by rocks, logs, and trail debris. Our weather-sealed motors are IP68-rated, meaning they continue operating after full submersion in water and mud.

The mounting system uses heavy-duty steel brackets with multiple attachment points to distribute load across your truck’s frame. This approach prevents the stress fractures common in off-road applications where standard running boards attach at only two points. We test every PowerStep Xtreme through 50,000 deployment cycles in temperatures ranging from -40°F to 150°F, ensuring reliable operation whether you’re in the Arctic or the Arizona desert.

Installation and Vehicle Compatibility
Sizing & fit

Installation and Vehicle Compatibility

The PowerStep Xtreme installs using vehicle-specific mounting brackets that bolt directly to your truck’s frame without drilling in most applications. We provide complete mounting kits for popular heavy-duty trucks including Ford Super Duty, Ram 2500/3500, Chevrolet Silverado HD, and GMC Sierra HD models.

Our OEM-style wiring harness plugs into your factory door sensors, triggering deployment when either door opens. The system draws power from your vehicle’s electrical system and includes integrated overcurrent protection. Most truck owners complete installation in 2-3 hours using common hand tools, though we recommend professional installation if you’re adding the PowerStep Xtreme to a truck with aftermarket electrical modifications.

Styling

Maintenance and Care

The PowerStep Xtreme requires minimal maintenance thanks to our sealed motor design and corrosion-resistant materials. After off-road trips, we recommend spraying mud and debris from the mounting area using a garden hose. The motors are fully sealed, so you can pressure wash the entire assembly without damaging internal components.

Every six months, inspect the mounting bolts and retighten if necessary, particularly if you frequently drive on rough terrain. The pivot points use sealed bearings that don’t require lubrication, but if you notice any squeaking during deployment, apply a small amount of silicone spray to the hinge pins. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants, as these can attract dirt and gum up the mechanism.

Perfect for my lifted F-250
I installed these on my 2021 F-250 with a 6-inch lift and 37-inch tires. The extra width makes a huge difference getting in and out compared to my old static steps. I've taken them through deep mud and creek crossings with no issues. The motors still work perfectly after a year of hard use.

Survived Moab without a scratch
Took my Ram 3500 through several trails in Moab and the PowerStep Xtreme handled everything I threw at it. They retract completely out of the way, so I never worried about clearance on obstacles. The automatic deployment is incredibly convenient when you're getting in and out multiple times to spot lines.

Rock-solid construction
These boards are built like tanks. I accidentally backed into a boulder and the step took the hit without any damage. The motors are powerful enough to deploy even when the boards are caked in dried mud. Installation took me about three hours working alone in my driveway.

Great boards, watch your budget
The PowerStep Xtreme is definitely a premium product with a premium price. That said, the quality is exceptional and I haven't found anything else that combines automatic operation with this level of durability. Worth every penny if you actually use your truck off-road regularly.

Game-changer for my wife
My wife is 5'2" and struggled to get into our lifted Silverado 2500. The PowerStep Xtreme solved that problem completely. She loves that they deploy automatically, and I love that they tuck up out of the way on the trail. Best upgrade we've made to the truck.

Still working in Canadian winters
I was skeptical about automatic running boards in Alberta winters, but these have performed flawlessly through two seasons. I added the optional heating element and haven't had any ice-related issues. The sealed motors handle road salt and slush without problems.

PowerStep Xtreme Questions

Yes, we specifically designed the PowerStep Xtreme for lifted trucks and off-road builds. The boards extend 6 inches from your rocker panel when deployed, providing comfortable step height even with 4-inch to 8-inch lift kits. The reinforced mounting system accommodates the additional stress from increased step height.

We manufacture vehicle-specific mounting kits for popular heavy-duty trucks including Ford Super Duty, Ram HD, Silverado HD, and Sierra HD models. If you have an extreme lift over 8 inches or custom suspension work, contact our technical support team to verify fitment for your specific configuration.

Each PowerStep Xtreme board supports up to 600 pounds when properly installed. This capacity easily handles multiple passengers entering the vehicle simultaneously or workers carrying heavy tools and equipment.

The 600-pound rating applies to the deployed position. We don't recommend standing on the boards when retracted, as this can damage the motors and mounting brackets. The weight capacity remains consistent whether you're using the boards on pavement or after exposure to mud, water, and trail conditions.

Most truck owners with basic mechanical skills can install the PowerStep Xtreme in 2-3 hours using common hand tools. We provide vehicle-specific mounting brackets that bolt directly to your frame, and our plug-and-play wiring harness connects to factory door sensors without cutting or splicing wires.

The installation requires lifting your truck on jack stands to access the frame mounting points. You'll need a socket set, torque wrench, and wire strippers for the electrical connection. Our detailed instructions include photos specific to your truck model. If you're not comfortable working under your vehicle or have aftermarket electrical modifications, we recommend professional installation.

The PowerStep Xtreme uses reinforced extruded aluminum construction designed to withstand rock impacts and trail debris. The aluminum platform flexes slightly on impact to absorb energy rather than cracking like composite materials. In most cases, rock strikes leave minor cosmetic damage but don't affect function.

If a severe impact bends the platform or damages the motor assembly, individual components are available for replacement. We stock motors, mounting brackets, and step platforms as separate parts. The structural components and motors carry our limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, though impact damage from off-road use isn't covered under warranty.

The PowerStep Xtreme retracts in approximately 2-3 seconds after you close your door, which is fast enough for most trail situations. The boards tuck tight against your rocker panel in the retracted position, maintaining the same ground clearance as your truck's frame rails.

For technical rock crawling where you need maximum clearance, close your doors before attempting obstacles to ensure the boards are fully retracted. The motors are sealed against dust and water, so they continue operating reliably even after submersion in mud or creek crossings. Some rock crawlers leave their doors closed during technical sections to keep the boards retracted continuously.

The PowerStep Xtreme mounts to your truck's frame rails and typically clears most aftermarket exhaust systems. However, some high-clearance exhaust configurations that route pipes outboard of the frame may require minor modifications to the exhaust hangers or mounting brackets.

Before ordering, check that your exhaust tips exit behind the rear edge of the doors, as the PowerStep extends from the cab area to just behind the rear door. If you have a custom exhaust with unusual routing, send us photos of your current setup and we can verify compatibility before you purchase.

Our weather-sealed motors carry an IP68 rating, meaning they're fully protected against dust and can operate after submersion in water. We test each motor assembly by submerging it in water for 30 minutes at depths up to 3 feet, then cycling it through deployment and retraction.

After water crossings, the boards may take slightly longer to retract if water has entered the mounting area, but the motors will continue working. Once you're back on dry ground, cycle the boards a few times to expel trapped water. The sealed bearings and stainless steel hardware prevent rust and corrosion even with regular water exposure.
